History: Chagrin Falls was incorporated as a village that encompassed areas formerly associated with 3 townships across two counties in March 1844.

This vertant area sprang up surrounding a natural waterfall on the Chagrin River. The village’s name comes from the waterfall itself, now located in the center of town. Early settlers from England and New England were attracted by the river. One of the earliest houses traces back to 1834. Between 1837 and 1870, manufactures sprung up around the river.

The population of the village in 1870 was just over 1,000. Throughout the 18th century, the village saw a gradual population growth so that the village had 1,586 residents by 1900. Growth remained steady until 1940, when the population decreased by 200 to 2,505 residents.

In the 1970s, the village approached the population needed for city status, but then the population declined once again. Today, about 4,000 residents live in Chagrin Falls.

Location: Chagrin Falls, Ohio consists of 2.14 square miles, 2.08 of which being land and 0.06 being water. This village is located on the south side of Lake Erie in Cuyahoga County.

With the Chagrin River running diagonally through the city, surrounding areas include notable green expanses and communities. Moreland Hills is situated northwest of town, and Russel Center lies northeast of the village.

South Russel is just on the other side of Chagrin Falls’ eastern border, and Bainbridge is a short drive southeast. Meanwhile, Bentleyville and the South Chagrin Reservation are southwest of town.
