Overview

ABOUT Chardon

Between 1795 and 1848, pioneers from New England arrived in what would later be known as Chardon, which created lasting English roots. As a location with 2 major trails that led east to the Western Reserve, Chardon was a frequent stop.

In 1810, a section of wilderness was bought for $400 from Boston native Peter Chardon Brooks. This stretch was later named Chardon, which is French for thistle. Peter Chardon Brooks later donated land towards the construction of Chardon Square. In 1812, Chardon officially achieved status as a village.

After a devastating fire in 1868, Chardon Town Hall and other buildings were rebuilt. The population remained small through the decades. In 1970, less than 4,000 residents lived in Chardon. This number gradually tracked upwards.

At the turn of the 21st century, Chardon became a city since the population was above 5,000. Today, the population is around 5,100.

Out of around 5,100 residents, 45.5% are male and 54.5% are female.

As for racial makeup, 90.5% of the city’s population is white, while 3.1% are black. 2.6% are of Asian descent, and 2.5% are Hispanic. The remaining 0.7% are of other racial backgrounds.

27.9% of residents over 25 years of age have a bachelor’s degree, and 9.2% of residents hold a graduate or professional degree.

With a median resident age of 41.4 years, the estimated median household income comes in around $62K. Additionally, 4.3% of the population is unemployed.
