Overview
ABOUT Macedonia
Macedonia’s history begins in the early 1800’s, when Henry Woods discovered a stream he later named Indian Run. Years afterwards, Abraham Cranmer bought 890 acres of land next to Indian Run, where he built the settlement’s first log house in 1824.
This settlement was referred to by later residents as “The Corners.” The small area slowly grew to include a school house in 1833, a church in 1835, and a local inn for those travelling between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
Local legend says that Macedonia’s name comes from a joke shared between divinity students attending Western Reserve College in the early 19th century in nearby Hudson. The students were requested to preach at “The Corners” and quoted Acts 16:10, which describes going to Macedonia to preach the Gospel. The name stuck, and “The Corners” was renamed.
Between 1930 and 1970, the city’s growth exploded from only 734 residents to 6,374 during 1970. Today, there are almost 12,000 residents.
Out of around 12,000 residents, 49.5% are male and 50.5% are female. With the median resident age being 45.2 years, the estimated median household income sits around $86K.
44% of residents have a bachelor’s degree, and 18.3% have a graduate or professional degree. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is around 3.6%.
As for the population’s racial makeup, 82.7% are white and 10.4% are black. Additionally, 3.9% of residents are Asian, and 1.5% are biracial or mixed race. 1.3% of residents are Hispanic, and 0.18% are of other ethnic backgrounds.
