Overview

ABOUT Malibu

Malibu is a coastal paradise located in Southern California. Archaeological findings have noted that Chumash Indians inhabited the area from as early as 500 B.C. In the 1500s, Spanish explorers and landowners set up camp in the area and named it “Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit.” Jose Bartolome Tapia is considered as the first owner of the Malibu area. In the 1850s, Matthew Keller bought the region to build a stone hunting lodge for his family. Today, the ruins of the Keller house serves as a reminder of how fires have shaped Malibu’s history.

Los Angeles businessman Frederick Rindge and his wealthy family are credited for transforming 17,000 acres of land into a peaceful, private haven. The Rindges brought Meditteranean architecture and ancient pottery into Malibu. In the 1930s, the Malibu Colony area became a beach colony for Hollywood stars. The city is now home to famous celebrities and is renowned worldwide for its picturesque beaches and stunning sunsets.

More than 6,000 residents are part of Malibu’s workforce. The majority of employees hold white-collar jobs. 20.3% of employees work in management occupations, 11.6% hold jobs in arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media, and 10.6% work in sales and related occupations. Nearly 62% of adults residing in Malibu have 4-year degrees or graduate degrees. Job growth in the city is expected to reach 33.7% over the next ten years.

Malibu has a population of 12,900 people and a median age of 52. Ethnic and racial groups represented in Malibu are led by White, Asian, and Latino residents.

Seeing as Malibu’s annual average temperature is just over the state’s annual average, the city experiences a great deal of sunshine, warm temperatures, and tolerable winters.

The average monthly temperature in Malibu during peak summer months is 74°F. Colder times of the year have average monthly temperatures around 54°F. For additional reference, the coldest temperatures in this part of the U.S. reach 43°F, and the hottest temperatures are in the 85°F range.

Malibu receives about 18 inches of rain per year and 24 rainy days annually. Unsurprisingly, snow doesn’t normally fall in this city. However, residents do enjoy lower humidity levels between November and January.

Natural Disasters
Natural Disasters

Although Malibu’s earthquake index of 17.89 is lower than California’s index of 21.80, Malibu still experiences regular earthquake activity. For reference, it’s common for around 10 earthquakes of varying magnitudes to hit Malibu within 7 days.

Malibu’s tornado index is roughly even with the statewide index of 18.56, which is noticeably lower than the U.S. index of 136.45. However, damaging high winds and thunderstorms are still commonplace in this part of California.

Malibu has a seasonal risk of flash floods, which account for almost half of all recorded weather extremes that occurred between 1950 and 2010. Hailstorms and wildfires are also concerns for local residents.
