Overview

ABOUT Parma

In 1806, Abraham Tappan surveyed land on the south side of Lake Erie on behalf of the Connecticut Land Company. This land later became known as Greenbriar, named for the rambling bush that the area was known for.

When the Greenbriar area became home to twenty households, the area was renamed Parma after Parma, Italy for its beauty. On April 3, 1826, the first 11 local government representatives were elected.

In 1847, a stone house named the Henninger House was constructed, and the house is still standing today.

Parma’s population in 1850 ranked in at 1,329, but population growth slowed after the Civil War. The population stayed roughly the same until 1910, when the population increased slightly to 1,631.

In 1920, Parma became a village of 2,345 residents, then upgraded to a city on January 1, 1931.

Today, Parma ranks as the 7th largest city in Ohio and the 2nd most populated city in Cuyahoga County.

Of around 80,000 residents, 48.6% are male, and 51.6% are female. With a median resident age of 41.7 years, the estimated median household income is $52K, just a hair above Ohio’s median household income. The unemployment rate is 4.5%.

As for racial makeup, the city is slightly more diverse than surrounding areas. 86.9% are white, 5.9% are Hispanic, 2.8% are Black, 2.0% are Asian, 1.9% are biracial, and 0.12% are of other ethnic backgrounds.

Out of residents who are 25 years and over, 20.6% have a Bachelor’s degree or above, while 7.8% have a graduate or professional degree.
