Overview
ABOUT Amherst
In 1811, Jacob Shupe cleared a section of land to build a log cabin next to a stream he named Beaver Creek. Because Shupe knew other settlers would bring with them a great demand for lumber, Shupe teamed up with a Pennsylvania carpenter and constructed Lorain County’s first sawmill.
Sure enough, the area attracted many early settlers. The land was referred to in 1836 as the “town plat of Amherst,” then Amherstville around 1839. Towards the latter end of the 1800’s, this area became known as the Sandstone Center of the World.
The excess of sandstone underneath the area led to a booming quarry industry, which encouraged many Swiss and German immigrants to settle in the Amherst area. The same local sandstone quarries supplied stone used to build many recognizable buildings in both Ohio and Canada.
In 1909, the area was renamed again to Amherst, and this time the name was meant to last.
Amherst is home to around 12,000 residents. 92% of the population is white, while 5.3% are Hispanic. 1% are multiracial, and 0.5% are black. Meanwhile, 0.4% are Asian, and 0.3% are American Indian. 48.2% of residents are male, while 51.8% are female.
With a median resident age of 44.6 years, which is higher than Ohio’s median age, the city’s median household income is $68K.
Out of residents over the age of 25, 23.5% hold a bachelor’s degree, and 8.5% have earned a graduate or professional degree. The unemployment rate is around 2%, which is under Ohio’s 4.1% average.
