Overview

ABOUT Amherst

In 1811, Jacob Shupe cleared a section of land to build a log cabin next to a stream he named Beaver Creek. Because Shupe knew other settlers would bring with them a great demand for lumber, Shupe teamed up with a Pennsylvania carpenter and constructed Lorain County’s first sawmill.

Sure enough, the area attracted many early settlers. The land was referred to in 1836 as the “town plat of Amherst,” then Amherstville around 1839. Towards the latter end of the 1800’s, this area became known as the Sandstone Center of the World.

The excess of sandstone underneath the area led to a booming quarry industry, which encouraged many Swiss and German immigrants to settle in the Amherst area. The same local sandstone quarries supplied stone used to build many recognizable buildings in both Ohio and Canada.

In 1909, the area was renamed again to Amherst, and this time the name was meant to last.

Amherst is home to around 12,000 residents. 92% of the population is white, while 5.3% are Hispanic. 1% are multiracial, and 0.5% are black. Meanwhile, 0.4% are Asian, and 0.3% are American Indian. 48.2% of residents are male, while 51.8% are female.

With a median resident age of 44.6 years, which is higher than Ohio’s median age, the city’s median household income is $68K.

Out of residents over the age of 25, 23.5% hold a bachelor’s degree, and 8.5% have earned a graduate or professional degree. The unemployment rate is around 2%, which is under Ohio’s 4.1% average.

On average, Amherst receives less amount of rain per year than is typical in Ohio. The city experiences an average of 37.18 inches per year. That said, Amherst’s average annual snowfall is 34.02 inches, which is notably over the state’s average of 26.63 inches and the U.S. average of 23.27 inches.

Natural Disasters
Natural Disasters

Because the city isn’t located near any major fault lines, Amherst has a lower likelihood of experiencing earthquakes than other parts of Ohio.

That said, Amherst’s location puts the city at a high risk of tornadoes forming nearby, so residents must be vigilant. For reference, the city’s tornado index is notably higher than the national average and about average for Ohio.

The city is also known for having serious wind storms, hailstorms, and thunderstorms cause substantial damage on an annual basis. Out of over 4,000 serious weather events that occurred in the city between 1950 to 2010, over half were thunderstorm and wind related, while 1/3 were hailstorms.
