Overview

ABOUT Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a coastal enclave located west of Los Angeles County.

Historians have noted that tribes of the Gabrielino and Chumash Indians were the area’s first inhabitants. Spanish and Mexican explorers came to the region from the 1500s up to the 1700s.

In 1872, Colonel Robert Baker bought more than 38,000 acres of the Rancho San Vicente Y Santa Monica from Jose Sepulveda. He used the land for grazing and sheepherding activities. In 1875, Senator and multi-millionaire John Jones took control of the rancho. Baker and Jones are credited for turning Santa Monica into a resort town and commercial center. The city was officially incorporated in 1886.

The 1900s saw the city’s rise to fame with the establishment of residential and commercial centers, piers, the Douglas aircraft, and popular clubs. The city also became home to Hollywood A-listers and famous personalities.

In 2017, Santa Monica was named by Time magazine as one of the best places to live in the U.S.

Nearly 53,000 people are part of Santa Monica’s workforce.

96% of residents are employed in white-collar jobs. 17.6% of employees hold jobs in management occupations, 11.8% work in creative businesses such as in the arts, design, entertainment, and media, and 9.42% hold positions in business and financial occupations.

Job growth is expected to reach 33% over the next ten years.

Santa Monica has a population of nearly 93,000 people with a median age of 40.5. 67% of residents have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, and Ph.D.

The city is home to eight racial and ethnic groups led by White, Latino, and Asian residents.
