ABOUT Galleria

An ultra-luxe mall, attractive skyscrapers, and world-class dining, entertainment, and shopping destinations – these and more are what make Galleria one of Houston’s busiest and most elegant neighborhoods. As one of Houston’s major business districts, Galleria lets residents enjoy the advantages of living near some of the fastest-growing companies, high-end fashion boutiques, and major entertainment and outdoor venues. The neighborhood has a good mix of upscale homes, luxurious high-rise buildings and condominiums, and some of the largest hotels with the most desirable amenities.

There are many vintage style single-family homes and affluent new custom-built homes in the neighborhood. Architectural styles and designs range from traditional and ranch to modern and contemporary with French and Mediterranean influences. Homes in the area are zoned to award-winning schools under the Houston Independent School District. The neighborhood is conveniently located near premier shopping malls that include the Galleria, Uptown Park, and Highland Village. Galleria is also the perfect place to be for those who wish to explore the finest restaurants, bars, and clubs.

Galleria is home to more than 26,000 people and has a median age of 40. The neighborhood has a high population of young professionals and married-couple families with children. Nearly 52% of workers in the area are employed in white-collar jobs. About 43% of employees work in private companies and about 4% work in government.

The most common types of jobs held by residents in the area include management occupations, business and financial operations occupations, and sales and office occupations. Nearly 30% of adults in the area have a bachelor’s degree or higher. White residents make up about 77% of the neighborhood’s total population. Natural Disasters

Galleria and the surrounding city of Houston are some of the worst hit areas in the country when it comes to natural disasters. The neighborhood can experience extreme heat, tropical storms, hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes and wildfires.

The area is especially prone to hurricanes and tornadoes. The local tornado index rating is 377.41, which is substantially higher than the state rating of 208.58. Hurricane season runs from June until November, but the worst storms usually arrive from the end of August until October.

Residents should be prepared with an evacuation plan for if and when a destructive storm or tornado hits the neighborhood.

Commute

Schools serving Galleria are under the jurisdiction of the Houston Independent School District. As the largest school district in Texas, the HISD manages 283 schools serving more than 214,000 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. African American students account for about 24%, and White students account for 9%. HISD received a Met Standard rating from the Texas Education Agency in 2016.
